Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using these treatments must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
